Week 2 - 13th September

The weekends are free time that I badly need to rest my tortured brain and forget about teaching. Spent last weekend around the beach and getting to now this very large City – the 3rd largest in Brazil with about 3,000,000 people.

Dined out with the other volunteers at local Japanese restaurant that was excellent but, of course no, Sussi for me with my allergies

Last Saturday Salvador celebrated Independence Day - from Portugal, with a massive display and parade though the City. The Military, Police and the Security forces were prominent throughout.

Monday – Wednesday – Friday, Somando

Settling down to the serious business of teaching English. Totally disorganised at Somando as too many students are coming and going at different times throughout the lesson. I seem to be taking one step backwards and two steps forwards as all are at different learning levels. A meeting with the Director resulted in a more structured system to divide the 28 students into two different groups, each a one and three quarters period. A register was then created. Worked fine yet still a few more new ones arrived. However much better and I can now teach the same lesson twice on the same day. It is a real challenge to ensure that the two groups stay at the same level. Good progress by end of last week.

Afternoons consisted of free time, Portuguese lessons, Cultural tours, Capoeira and Samba lessons. We are all tired but satisfied with what we are trying to achieve. Thursday farewell dinner for Sharan who leaves today. Now just 4 of us until mid October when 25 arrive - 24 girls and one man?

Tuesday – Thursday -  Baixe da Alegeria

2 hours.  Real progress here as there are less students to teach – about 10. Have managed to get to the same level of English as Somando so with a bit of luck I can coordinate the teaching for both centres and use the same lessons each week. Lovely local people whose only desire is to improve themselves within this very poor community. The area is desperately poor as these photos show yet the people are so cheerful.

Weekend at last and time to rest my brain. As two of the 3 girls are ill Christina and I decide to go 35 miles up country to a recommended village and beach area for the day. WOW - we have found a tropical paradise just like the Caribbean
, wonderful beaches, palm trees, warm water, beautiful sand,  etc and a great escape from the big city. So nice we decided to stay overnight so as not to miss it. Just got back at 5.00pm Sunday to write this.
