Week 8 - 25th October

Weekend 25th October
Shopping and generally investigating Salvador again. A City of vast divisions of wealth and poverty. A once beautiful City, that still is in many places, but has been allowed to deteriorate in many areas. There is a programme of restoration that is hampered by lack of finance and the sheer size of the restoration work required and will take many years to accomplish

Monday to Wednesday
Things are getting complicated now as the first group are improving and I am into verbs, conversation, questions and answers. Testing my brain to the limit. The new group two is lively and catching up fast, probably because I now know what I am doing (I think)

This week I have been asked to photograph different placements after lessons that I love doing.
These will be used for publicity and power point presentation. Here are todays two.

FRUTOS DE MAES
Wednesday I photographed the children and this Institution for Cross Cultural for publicity and power point presentations

The community day care centre of Frutus De Maes is an institution founded in 1999. It was founded by Tia Mira, a community woman, resident of Alagardos, Salvador. This is an extremely poor area where many people built houses made of wood and cardboard, many on stilts in the ocean. The sanitation is unbelievable and the area has the very basic and minimal living conditions and is excluded from the Society’s rights and benefits

She started to bring the children to her house in order to take care of them whilst their parents were working or for other reasons. The number of children grew very quickly so she had to look for another place to put them. The present location was donated and at the beginning was just a large piece of land. Little by little she built a hugh house that could house many children. The local community helped with labour and materials, all donated free.

This hugh house is now a day care centre and provides education for 125 children who live in poverty. Its mission is to guide and guarantee education for children ranging from 0-five years old. The financial support for this wonderful venture comes from the local government and from donations.

Most of the children are orphans or were abandoned by their parents. The orphanage is their home and they attend school regularly.

Our volunteers work developing a series of activities such as recreation, drawings, art and crafts classes, paintings, reading English books, teaching basic English and dance classes

Friday again and this week has whizzed past without any trauma. My new group have settled in well and provide another challenge. This is also election week and the whole town is going wild with demonstrations and vans whizzing around blaring out loud music. Should all be back to whatever is normal next week
